the-silence-in-between replied to your post: I’m a bit late, but I’d like to know… aside from Regina, who are your fave OUaT characters? Characters you’d like to spork through the heart? And do you have any OTPs?
LMAO, our lists are practically identical. Is anyone more of a fail of a conscience than Jiminy? And ugh, I can’t even describe the effect that Geppetto and Leopold’s faces have on me. But Regina/happiness FTW!
Jiminy was such a fail!conscience. I mean, I did feel a little bad when Geppetto made that comment about his parents to him, but still - fail!conscience. He shouldn’t have allowed Geppetto to do what he did (I also feel that the Blue Fairy ultimately should have said something as well). That was such a rage-tastic episode. I just wanted to punch nearly everyone in the face after it.
I really want to see Snow’s and James’ reactions when they discover what Geppetto did (can we please have season two already?).
Leopold’s just a douche - no further explanation needed. :P And Regina/happiness always <3

Parallels between certain past/present relationships are realized, there’s an awkward/tense encounter, and someone has a conversation with Henry (probably not the Henry you’re thinking about, or maybe it is - and if it isn’t, there will be a conversation with that Henry too at some point).
When your language routinely obliges you to specify certain types of information, it forces you to be attentive to certain details in the world and to certain aspects of experience that speakers of other languages may not be required to think about all the time. And since such habits of speech are cultivated from the earliest age, it is only natural that they can settle into habits of mind that go beyond language itself, affecting your experiences, perceptions, associations, feelings, memories and orientation in the world. (…)
The habits of mind that our culture has instilled in us from infancy shape our orientation to the world and our emotional responses to the objects we encounter, and their consequences probably go far beyond what has been experimentally demonstrated so far; they may also have a marked impact on our beliefs, values and ideologies. We may not know as yet how to measure these consequences directly or how to assess their contribution to cultural or political misunderstandings.

I was still on the bus when I got your ask, so definitely not late — I actually wrote out an elaborate answer, went to publish it, and then the wifi on the bus died.
Besides Regina, I’ve liked Ruby/Red since the very beginning and love her even more now, especially after Red-Handed. Initially, Emma was my favorite, but as the season progressed I just wanted to constantly smack some sense into her. I also like bandit!Snow.
Characters I’d like to spork through the heart: Geppetto, Jiminy Cricket, the Blue Fairy, and King Leopold. Yup.
I really don’t have any OTPs, but I do find myself reading Swan Queen from time to time. Frankly, in the end, I just want Regina to be happy.

In a classroom environment, I’ve studied five: Italian (4 years), Spanish (3 years), Latin (2 years), French (9 weeks) and Chinese (9 weeks.) French and Chinese were part of a cultural studies class that focused on four languages throughout the entire academic year (the other two being Spanish and Italian). I remember absolutely no Chinese at all. My French is insanely minimal and I can only recall bits and pieces of Spanish. As for Latin, we were taught at my university, like most, how to sightread/translate.
Outside the classroom, I’ve picked up a very tiny bit of German since a small portion of my family lives in Germany.
So out of that list, I only speak Italian fluently. I’m more fluent in English now than my native Sicilian. Language attrition is common when the dominate language of the place where you live is different than your native.
I also know I have my quirks when I speak/write English. For one thing, I say ‘open/close/shut the light/tv’ which always causes friends to giggle.
Edit: I feel that whenever I get asked this question, I always need to tack this to the end of it: linguistics is not the study of multiple languages, but the scientific study of language in general.
After writing out two scenes of VSF (yay, progress), surfing the linguistics/Lana Parrilla/various other tags here, and watching the series finale of House, I still have four hours until I reach my destination.
So… entertain me, maybe? Ask me things! Fandom, language, linguistics, anything. :)
And out of curiosity I look up the average salary of a linguist.
To make a long story short, I’m gonna be a linguist

WHOAH WAIT HOLD IT WHERE THE FUCK ARE THESE JOBS?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
I find it endearing when my dad has little linguistic moments. I mean, it wasn’t until April that he finally admitted that he had no idea what I was studying, so I think it’s cool that he’s catching on. This was our conversation last night:
Dad: Did you know that New York City is the most linguistically diverse city in the entire world?
Me: I’d believe it. We’ve been hearing so many-
Dad: No, bella, really. 9 million people, 800 languages, and they co-exist.
Me: Can you image if they all came together to form one big massive super language?
Dad: … Can that happen?
Me: Uh, maybe..?
Which then lead to a language evolution ramble. It was a fun, geeky conversation.
Anyway - I found an audio language meme. Would anyone be interested in hearing some Sicilian accented Italian?
I’ve been using my Sony DSC-HX1 sans any problems for two years. In the last year, I’ve been using it more frequently since I started working for a stock image company.
Today while shooting, the unit started shaking, as did the image in the view finder. I turned the camera off and on, but it was still shaking, accompanied by a low rumbling sound. After a few more attempts, the camera finally did stop shaking, but it now tremors for a second when turning on.
I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this issue with this or other models.
My travel buddy and I got back to the sublet early this evening. He requested we watch the pilot of OUaT because he wanted to finally see what all the fuss is about. For the record, he’s teased me all season long about my obsessive ways and rolled his eyes at me when I asked him to take a picture of me with the OUaT sign in Time Square.
We’re now on episode three and he just shouted ‘WHAT’ when John Doe grabbed Mary Margaret’s hand while she was reading to him. I’ve wanted to go to sleep by the end of episode two, but he insisted we keep watching. So, do you think he’s figured out what the fuss is about? :P
Our spring trip to Vancouver just got a lot more interesting.
